I wrote my PhD thesis in the period October 1998 until January 2003 at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), Faculty of Economics and Econometrics (FEE), Department of Quantitative Economics (QE), Subdepartment Center for Nonlinear Dynamics in Economics and Finance (CeNDEF). I successfully defended my dissertation in public at March 3, 2003. This happened in "De Oude Lutherse Kerk", a wonderful old former church (1633) in the center of Amsterdam. My thesis supervisors were Prof. Dr. C.H. Hommes and Prof. Dr. H.P. Boswijk. The members of the dissertation defense committee were Dr. J.J. van Duijn, Prof. Dr. P.H.B.F. Franses, Prof. Dr. F.C.J.M. de Jong, Prof Dr. B. LeBaron, Dr. ir. F.O.O.Wagener and Prof. Dr. H.N. Weddepohl.
